Roman lamp with Christian cross and croziers

Period: Late Roman

Origin: North Africa

Date: 5th century AD


Superbly crisp example of a North African Red Slipware lamp showing a stylised cross symbol ornamented within a square (probably intended to represent the jewelled cover of the gospels). This is complemented by further Christian motifs - bishops' croziers - on the shoulder.
