AC2

Reference: AC2 / Cat. No.

Period: Roman

Date: 50 – 400 AD

Description:
Lamp hook (eye at bottom originally fitted with chains for hanging a lamp).

Fabric: Copper alloy.

Size (cm): L. 9.9, W. 3.6

Notes:
Cf. BMC IV, Q3838-41; Loeschcke, 1061; Goethert, 143.

Comments:
'Hook-and-spike' type (flat form). The versatile design allowed a lamp attached by an arrangement of chains to the eye at the bottom to be suspended from a stand, ceiling or wall either by placing the hook over a raised projection or by inserting the spike into a crevice.

Although not present here, some examples have a smaller upturned hook near the bottom and it is likely that this provided a convenient place to hang wick-tuning implements such as a wick-pin or tweezers when not in use.
