RSP4

Reference: RSP4 / Cat. No.

Period: Roman

Origin: Syro-Palestine

Date: 100 250 AD

Description:

Manufacture: Mould made.

Notes:
Cf. Vine & Hartelius, 1931 (Type 10A).
Kennedy Type 5.

Comments:
The discus of this type of lamp was often deliberately broken in antiquity. It has sometimes been speculated in older literature that this was done in order to erase any discus motifs that might offend the religious sensibility of the owner but that motive is unlikely to have been the primary cause. See the comment under a Balkan factory lamp (which usually have no iconography at all).
