RNA17

Reference: RNA17 / Cat. No.

Period: Roman

Origin: Probably Tunisia

Date: 175 250 AD

Description:

On discus: facing bust of Sol.

Manufacture: Mould made.

Notes:

Comments:
The face of Sol bears a resemblance to some representations of Commodus (161 192 AD, ruled 180 192 AD), possibly a deliberate association with a god the emperor vigorously promoted.

Commodus was particularly fond of being portrayed as heroes or divinities. See for instance a bronze statuette of Mercury with the face of the emperor in the Rouen Museum (Sennequier, Collections Gallo-Romaines, Rouen, 1981, pp.36-7).
