Reference: HW8 / Cat. No.

Period: Hellenistic

Origin: Egypt, probably Alexandria area

Date: 250 – 50 BC

Manufacture: Wheel made.

Size (cm): L. 7.0, W. 4.5, H. 4.7 (ih)

Notes:
Cf. BMC I, Q531-2; Bailey, 6b; Mlasowsky, 15-16; Szentléleky, 257; Bussière & Lindros Wohl, 510; Hayes, 43 (wheel-made), 183-4 (mould-made); Milns Museum, Queensland, 88.002; Petrie Museum, UC54153, UC54154.
Usage: see Knell, 'Puzzle jug solution?', Ancient Heritage 2019.

Comments:
The distinctive form suggests devices of this type served as both lamps and censers. The perforations above the wick-hole would allow incense placed in the upper part to be heated by the flame. This example was thrown on a wheel but the type was also made in moulds.
